The world-renowned ensemble performs Ravel’s only work for string quartet as well as Beethoven’s op. 59, no. 2 (one of the Razumovsky quartets) and the world premiere of Lei Liang’s Verge Quartet. The Shanghai Quartet has appeared on the PBS series "Great Performances," and the group is ensemble-in-residence with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. The New York Times has called their performances “utterly sublime,” and The Strad declared them “a foursome of uncommon refinement.” The Washington Post praised their “unwavering unanimity of expressive intent.”

Composer Lei Liang has written for the New York Philharmonic and is a winner of the prestigious Rome Prize. Wire magazine calls him “one of the most exciting voices in new music.” His last work premiered at the Freer and was described by the Washington Post as “far, far out of the ordinary, brilliantly original, and inarguably gorgeous.”

Presented as part of the Bill and Mary Meyer Concert Series.
