Join us for a free one-day workshop for educators at the Japanese American National Museum, hosted by the USC U.S.-China Institute and the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia. This workshop will include a guided tour of the beloved exhibition Common Ground: The Heart of Community, slated to close permanently in January 2025. Following the tour, learn strategies for engaging students in the primary source artifacts, images, and documents found in JANM’s vast collection and discover classroom-ready resources to support teaching and learning about the Japanese American experience.

Traditional Hakka Music, Opera, and Folksongs featuring Taiwan’s Miao-Li Chen Family Pei-Kuan Pa-Yin Group, directed by Dr. Cheng Rom-Shing
As part of its month-long Sensing Taiwan series, the Indiana University-Bloomington East Asian Studies Center and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of China (Taiwan) are pleased to present the Miao-Li Chen Family Pei-Kuan Pa-Yin Group ((苗栗陳家班北管八音團), directed by Dr. Cheng Rom-Shing (鄭榮興). Dr. Cheng is the fifth generation of directors of this group, which was formed over a century ago by traditional Hakka musicians in northern Taiwan. Prof. Cheng and his group are committed to preserving and promoting the music, folk arts, and cultural heritage of Taiwan’s Hakka community. In 2010, this highly acclaimed troupe of musicians was designated by the Taiwanese government as the primary preserver of Hakka pa-yin music. While in Bloomington, Director Cheng and ten musicians will participate in performances, musical conversations, and educational programs.
