China’s Pollution Catastrophe and the Unlikely Film That is Forcing the Nation to Pay Attention
Under the Dome is a powerful and personal documentary on China’s air pollution by former CCTV reporter Chai Jing. Premiering on China’s Internet on the eve of nationwide political meetings, Under the Dome exceeded 200 million views in under a week and sparked a historic social media discussion. The film was initially lauded by China’s media and new Environmental Minister, but discussion of the piece has since been tamped down by China’s censors. The Wilson Center’s China Environment Forum and Kissinger Institute will screen the first half of the film (with English subtitles), which contains the bulk of Chai Jing’s argument. A panel discussion of the environmental issues raised by Under the Dome and the political issues raised by its reception will follow.
Please note that we will only be screening the first 45 minutes of the documentary. The Live Webcast will start following the screening when the panel discussion begins at approximately 2:45PM. Thank you for your cooperation.
