Rank and Style: Power Dressing in Imperial China is the story of how status, so desperately sought and carefully preserved among China’s elite, was expressed through insignia of rank and the robes and accessories that went with them. For members of the emperor’s court in China’s Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasties (1644-1911), the cloth symbols sewn to their robes conferred status and power. What were the power symbols? And who was entitled to wear them?
