Post-Mao Dreaming: Chinese Contemporary Art presents over thirty prints, drawings, photographs and paintings that offer a glimpse of the post-Cultural Revolution era in China following Mao Zedong’s death, when Chinese artists began to throw off the restrictions of Maoist Communism (1949-1979) and to reclaim their individuality.

The exhibition includes both traditional and contemporary media, and provides a dialogue between China’s recent past and modern realities. While the exhibition surveys the work of 22 noted Chinese artists who were mainly working in the 1980s, a few prints highlight current artists, such as the Luo Brothers, Yue Minjun, and Qin Feng. An illustrated catalogue accompanies this traveling exhibition, which was organized by Smith College Museum of Art.

On Wednesday, February 23 at 4:30 PM the Arthur Ross Gallery will present a panel discussion, Post-Mao in Context, with Jacques deLisle, Stephen A. Cozen Professor of Law at Penn and Chair, Center for East Asian Studies and Nancy Steinhardt, Professor of East Asian Art, Curator of Chinese Art at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, and the Graduate Chair of the East Asian Languages and Civilizations. This event is co-sponsored by the Arthur Ross Gallery and the Center for East Asian Studies.

Group tours of the exhibition will be offered in Chinese and English by reservation. To reserve a group tour please contact 215-898-3617. Post-Mao Dreaming will continue at the Arthur Ross Gallery. 220 S. 34th Street, Philadelphia, through April 3, 2011.
