New Directions: Contemporary Art in China

A conversation on new trends in Chinese contemporary art with Thomas J. Berghuis, Curator of Chinese Art at The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Melissa Chiu, Director of Asia Society Museum and co-curator of Zhang Huan: Evoking Tradition. Co-presented by Asia Society and Storm King Art Center. In conjunction with the exhibition Zhang Huan: Evoking Tradition currently on view at Storm King Art Center.

Melissa Chiu, Museum Director and Senior Vice President of Global Arts and Cultural Programs for Asia Society in New York, is responsible for the exhibition program at Asia Society Museum, which has included groundbreaking presentations such as TOOBA: Shirin Neshat, Zhang Huan: Altered States, Art and China's Revolution, Yang Fudong: Seven Intellectuals in a Bamboo Forest, Yoshitomo Nara: Nobody's Fool, and Sarah Sze: Infinite Line.

Thomas J. Berghuis is the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Curator of Chinese Art at The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; he has curated several exhibitions of contemporary Asian art, including most recently the international group exhibition Suspended Histories at Museum van Loon in Amsterdam (2013). He is also a visiting scholar at the Center for China in the World at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia.  The author of Performance Art in China (2006), the first major art-historical study on performance art in China, his other writings have been published in prominent journals and art magazines and Dr. Berghuis is also a member of the editorial team of the newly established Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art.
