National Heritage, Collectables and Forgeries: (Dis)Functions of Ancient Artifacts in Asia

Dr. Louis will give a talk on Chinese antiquities from the Liao period (907-1126), entitled “Gilded Splendor: The Liao Dynasty and the Chinese Antiquities Market” at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Louis will also join Dr. Janice Leoshko for a brown bag conversation on the roles of ancient artifacts in the making of national identity.

The Center for East Asian Studies is pleased to welcome Dr. François Louis, Associate Professor of Chinese Art, Bard Graduate Center, New York.  Dr. Louis will give a talk on Chinese antiquities from the Liao period (907-1126), entitled “Gilded Splendor: The Liao Dynasty and the Chinese Antiquities Market” at 4 pm, Monday, November 15, ART 1.120.

Dr. Louis is a leading scholar on Chinese art and material culture from the early to middle periods.  His talk will analyze the dynamic changes in the understanding of the Liao dynasty due to the extraordinary archaeological discoveries in recent years.  He will also discuss an interesting development in China and around the world revolving collecting and forging Liao artifacts.

Dr. Louis will also joinDr. Janice Leoshko from Asian Studies and Art and Art History for a brown bag conversation on the roles of ancient artifacts in the making of national identity at noon, Monday, November 15, Meyerson Conference Room, WCH 4.118.
