Music From China Ensemble: 30th Anniversary Concert
The Smithsonian's Museum of Asian Art presents New York's Music From China ensemble, who will celebrate its thirtieth anniversary with new works for Chinese and Western instruments.

Where
New York’s outstanding Music From China ensemble returns to the Freer Gallery, celebrating its thirtieth anniversary with newly commissioned works for Chinese and Western instruments. Featured are pieces by Grammy Award-winner Zhou Long, Huang Ruo (whose latest work debuted this summer with the Santa Fe Opera), Wang Guowei, Chen Yi, and Eric Moe. The ensemble features such Chinese instruments as the erhu (fiddle), pipa (lute), zheng (zither), sheng (mouth organ), and dizi (flute), along with cello and percussion. This concert follows the ensemble’s performance at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall.
The complete program includes Chen Yi’s Chinese Dancing Tunes (DC premiere); Huang Ruo’s The Paths (DC premiere); Eric Moe’s Panoramic Guide to Glacier Travel (DC premiere); Wang Guowei’s Leaving Home (DC premiere); and Zhou Long’s Mount a Long Wind (2004).
Music From China ensemble members are Wang Guowei, erhu; Chen Yihan, pipa; Zhou Jing, zheng; Hu Jianbing, sheng; Hong-da Chin, dizi; Michael Katz, cello; and Frank Cassara, percussion.
