Join us for a free one-day workshop for educators at the Japanese American National Museum, hosted by the USC U.S.-China Institute and the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia. This workshop will include a guided tour of the beloved exhibition Common Ground: The Heart of Community, slated to close permanently in January 2025. Following the tour, learn strategies for engaging students in the primary source artifacts, images, and documents found in JANM’s vast collection and discover classroom-ready resources to support teaching and learning about the Japanese American experience.
Lunar New Year Festival
Celebrate the Year of the Sheep across Asia with a free day of performances, demonstrations, hands-on activities and gallery admission.
USC Pacific Asia Museum's 5th annual Lunar New Year Festival celebrating Year of the Sheep takes place Saturday, January 31, from 11 am to 5 pm, with performances, crafts, a puppet show, artist demonstrations and access to the museum galleries. Admission is free and open to the public. A full schedule is available at pacificasiamuseum.usc.edu.
The museum welcomes a delegation of 42 performers and traditional artisans from the Guangdong Province in China, and will also showcase the cultures of Korea, Cambodia and Vietnam who all celebrate the Lunar New Year as well. Performances and demonstrations will take place under a large tent in the museum's parking lot, while activities and crafts are available in the courtyard and auditorium. Food trucks around the parking lot provide a varied selection all day long.

Performances:
11 am Lion dance
11:30 am-1 pm Guangdong delegation performance (songs and dances, puppet show, acrobatics, magic show, martial arts, opera)
1-1:30 pm Break
1:30-2 pm Vietnamese dances
2-3:30 pm Guangdong delegation performance (same as the 1st show)
3:30-4 pm Break
4-4:30 pm Korean dances and drumming
4:30-5 pm Taekwondo
Demonstrations:
Artisans from Guangdong was demonstrate the making of folk arts items including ceramics and pottery, lanterns, clay sculpture, miniature sculpture and embroidery.
Crafts & Activities:
Year of the Sheep group activity, sheep craft, lantern making, firecracker making, calligraphy workshop, etc. Plus, zodiac animal book program with author Oliver Chin, and public tours of the museum.
