Rawson's autobiographical statements:

Background

I began my career in the British Museum working on ancient China. I moved to Oxford to become Warden of the College in 1994. My work as Warden is concerned with the administration of the College, with its academic achievements and its life as a community of students and academics.
Subject(s)

My academic work covers all aspects of Chinese Art and Archaeology. I do not teach undergraduates in the College; however, I do supervise graduates.
Research interests

My principal area of research is Han period (206 BC- AD 220), and within this area I concentrate on the development of religion and belief as seen in the material record, in tombs and other remains. I also study the creation of ornaments and patterns in Chinese art of all periods, most especially the designs of birds and flowers seen on ceramics and on textiles exported to many parts of the world. I have always also had a strong interest in Chinese ritual bronzes, in their roles and significances.
Teaching

A weekly graduate seminar on Chinese Art and Archaeology topics over each of the three terms of the academic year.
