Finding Chinatown
A solo exhibition of a decade-long fine art photographic project on the Chinatowns of the United States and Canada, photographed by Sara Jane Boyers.
Where
The Chinese Historical Society of Southern California (CHSSC) members and others are invited to a special gallery walk and discussion led by John Jung, Sonia Mak, and Sara Jane Boyers.
Over the past decade, Boyers has photographed 50+ Chinatowns in the United States and Canada. Her work explores the breadth of the Chinatowns that now range from historic to gleaming new malls serving the growing Asian population. Throughout, Boyers focuses on the detail of the everyday as she examines these portals into the American dream. Boyers remarks, “I am fascinated by the light, vibrancy and history of the Chinatowns. The vitality of each living, changing community and the general welcoming nature of those who pass through inspire me always. What intrigues me most are the still moments, even in the oft-frenetic mist.”
John Jung is the author of four books, Southern Fried Rice, Chinese Laundries, Sweet and Sour, and Chopsticks in the Land of Cotton, which have provided insight into the Chinese American historical landscape.
