The opening reception will be Saturday, July 14, 6:00-8:30pm as part of the quarterly ArtNight at 18th Street open house event, featuring gallery and open studio exhibits and a free performance by acclaimed dance and music duo, Oguri and Adam Rudolph.
"Republic of China, without People!" is a painting installation based on an adult-underground black comedy animation about Modern Chinese history and manipulative politicians by means of stop-motion animation techniques. “The idea came from my observation of cultures, especially at the time of my studying in Germany. I figured out that every culture is unique and so different from each other. By that time, I gained a great interest in discovering them, learning them, and using them. This work consists of several chapters. The story goes from the Opium War in 1842 to Modern Society. Chapter 1: Chinese SUSHI, Chapter 2: Godzilla is coming, Chapter 3: Civil War, Chapter 4: Chinese Dream.”
Born in Taipei, multidisciplinary artist Ming Hsu creates animation, video, multimedia, and design works. After studying in Taiwan, he studied further in Germany, earning a certificate in Visual Media Art from Offenbach am Main College of Design. Ming Hsu’s residency is sponsored by the Council on Cultural Affairs, Taiwan.
