This 2005 film in Chinese (with English subtitles), adapted from Wang Anyi’s novel that won the Fifth Mao Dun Literature Award, follows a legendary Shanghai beauty from her glamorous days in the 1940s to a simpler life in the 1980s as she struggles to preserve her dignity while surviving constant betrayals by her lovers and changes to her city. The film won the award for European art exchange at the 2005 Venice Film Festival.
This film represents a Southern style which is closer to the tradition of early Chinese films. Mr. Li Daoji, a director from Shanghai Film Group and a native of Shanghai, will answer questions on the film.
