Join us for an evening with internationally renowned artist Cai Guo-Qiang, whose incredible large-scale works employ explosives to explore social, cultural and historical issues. Widely known for his spectacular pyrotechnic displays above the Beijing National Stadium (the “Bird’s Nest”) at the 2008 Summer Olympics, Cai crosses multiple mediums within art, including drawing, installation, video and performance art. Cai’s use of gunpowder in his drawings led to his experimentation with explosives and the development of his signature explosion events. Drawing upon Eastern philosophy and contemporary issues, his works reference culture, history and the specific sites in which they are presented. Cai’s work and projects have been exhibited internationally at the Metropolitan Museum, NY; the Museum of Modern Art, NY; the Guggenheim
Museum, NY; the National Art Museum of China, Beijing; and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain.
An exhibition of his work entitled Cai Guo-Qiang: Sky Ladder will open on April 8 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
