Since the late 1980s, Taiwan's environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have led projects, protests, and watchdog activities that have had a major role in shaping pollution control and conservation policies. Unlike many of their mainland counterparts, environmental NGOs have frequently clashed openly with the government and industries.

On Tuesday, September 8, the China Environment Forum and the Asia Program will host an informal talk on environmental activism in Taiwan by three members of the Taiwan Environmental Information Association (TEIA). For the past 4 years, TEIA has carried out education and nature reserve protection activities in Taiwan and provided a platform for exchange to help empower communities and grassroots NGOs to protect the environment. The speakers will discuss their successes and the challenges of implementing green NGO initiatives in Taiwan, and share some insights on working with mainland NGO groups.
