Join us for a free one-day workshop for educators at the Japanese American National Museum, hosted by the USC U.S.-China Institute and the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia. This workshop will include a guided tour of the beloved exhibition Common Ground: The Heart of Community, slated to close permanently in January 2025. Following the tour, learn strategies for engaging students in the primary source artifacts, images, and documents found in JANM’s vast collection and discover classroom-ready resources to support teaching and learning about the Japanese American experience.
East Asian Library Opening Celebration
Established in 1989, USC's East Asian Library celebrates its relocation to the Edward L. Doheny Jr. Memorial Library.
Where
Friday, November 2, 2007 : 2:30pm to 5:00pm
At this fete, USC Vice Provost for Globalization Adam Clayton Powell III details how the East Asian Library’s collections support international scholarship at USC.
USC has had close ties to East Asia since its earliest years, when the School of Theology trained missionaries for service in China, Japan and Korea. The formal study of East Asian cultures dates back to the founding of the Department of Oriental Studies and Comparative Literature in 1911.
In support of East Asian studies, the USC Libraries have been actively collecting Chinese and Japanese cultural materials for the last half century. With the founding of the Korean Heritage Library in 1986, USC launched an ambitious campaign that has allowed it to assume a leading role among Korean studies libraries nationwide.
USC’s East Asian Library was established in 1989, initiating a period of steady growth for the Chinese, Japanese and Korean studies collections.
The East Asian Library moved into the Edward L. Doheny Jr. Memorial Library in the summer of 2007. In close proximity to Doheny’s arts and humanities research collections and English language resources, it nurtures interdisciplinary exchanges with scholars in many areas of study.
