EASC Colloquium: Joyce Man, "China's Economic Growth, Urbanization, and Development Strategy"

Indiana University hosts the sixth EASC colloquium of the spring semester

China has been experiencing rapid economic growth and urbanization in the past thirty years. Many people are trying to understand what are the driving forces of this growth and questioning whether Chinese growth model is sustainable.  This lecture will discuss the trends and patterns of China's economic growth, urbanization process, financing urban growth, housing reform and outcomes, and major risks and challenges facing China.  It is hope that this lecture will help our students better understand what is happening in the world second largest economy and will stimulate interest in future research in the related areas.

Joyce Yanyun Man is Associate Professor of Economics at School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Indiana University at Bloomington. She is also a senior fellow of Peking University-Lincoln Institute Center for Urban Development and Land Policy and a visiting fellow of the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy.

Joyce Yanyun Man’s teaching and research interests focus on urban and regional economics, public finance, housing economics, land policy, and sustainable development.  Professor Man received her Ph.D. degree in economics from the Johns Hopkins University in 1993. She has contributed many articles to international and domestic journals and has authored several books including:  Tax Increment Financing and Economic Development: Uses, Structures, and Impact (co-edited with Craig Johnson, 2001); China’s Local Public Finances in Transition (co-edited with YuHung Hong, 2010), China’s Housing Reform and Outcomes (2011),  China’s Environmental Policy and Urban Development (2013), and The Future of Public Housing: Ongoing Trends in the East and the West (co-edited with Jie Chen and Mark Stephens, 2013).  She was formerly the founding Director of the Peking University-Lincoln Institute Center for Urban Development and Land Policy and Director of the China Program and Senior Fellow at the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy.
