Join us for a free one-day workshop for educators at the Japanese American National Museum, hosted by the USC U.S.-China Institute and the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia. This workshop will include a guided tour of the beloved exhibition Common Ground: The Heart of Community, slated to close permanently in January 2025. Following the tour, learn strategies for engaging students in the primary source artifacts, images, and documents found in JANM’s vast collection and discover classroom-ready resources to support teaching and learning about the Japanese American experience.

This program, funded by the USC School of Cinematic Arts, the Communication University of China, the USC U.S.-China Institute and Mr. Stephen Lesser, began in 2006 to bring students together to explore important characteristices of Los Angeles and Beijing.
Each year a handful of students from one of the schools travels with one or two faculty members to the other country and school. There they form pairs, identify a topic to explore, and in a matter of weeks complete a short documentary.
You are invited to join us for a screening of these films. Here are the pairs of filmmakers:

They have been guided by Johanna Demetrakas, Mark Harris and Marsha Kinder from USC and Si Ruo and Rong Lu from Communication University of China.
A reception will follow the screening.
