Dinner: Cultural Minister of China in Los Angeles
The Chinese Minister of Culture, Cai Wu, will address the Los Angeles World Affairs Council over a dinner on July 2nd 2014.
The Chinese Minister of Culture, Cai Wu, will address the Los Angeles World Affairs Council over a dinner on July 2nd 2014. Mr Cai will discuss the growth of popular culture in China as a younger, more affluent, and overwhelmingly online generation seeks new forms of artistic expression that differ from traditional Chinese culture.
With a rapidly expanding economy over the past two decades, China has seen an accompanying rise in interest in films, television, pop music, video games and blogging. Mr Cai has said China should export more of its popular culture and not just focus on traditional art forms with their roots in centuries past. China has a particularly vibrant film industry, with the second largest box office take in the world after the US - but too few Chinese films make their way overseas to an international audience. As minister, Cai has said the government should not overly interfere in China’s cultural development.
Cai is a graduate of Peking University, from where he graduated with a degree in international politics. He currently is a professor of international relations at Renmin University. Cai was appointed Minister of Culture in 2008.
Please RSVP by Monday, June 30. Cancellations must be made at least two business days in advance in order to secure a refund.
