Since 2008, state agencies at the national and subnational level in China have begun to promote "corporate social responsibility" in various forms, primarily among leading companies. Based on recent fieldwork in China, Virginia Harper Ho will discuss how emerging concepts of "corporate citizenship" or "corporate social responsibility" are being defined by the state and the potential impact of these initiatives on legal compliance and business practice in China.
