Chinese Pipa Concert by Yi Zhou

The University of Oregon's Confucius Institute for Global China Studies will host a pipa concert performed by Chinese multi-instrumentalist Yi Zhou.

Praised for her “breathtaking” meticulous technique and expressiveness by the Washington Post, Chinese multi-instrumentalist Zhou Yi started to learn musicat the age of five. After graduating from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music,Zhou Yi moved to New York. Her highlight performances include: played guqin and pipa as a seasonal artist with the Santa Fe Opera for the new contemporary production Dr. Sun Yat-sen; world premier of a qin and electronic piece in MATA Festival; featured pipa soloist of Tan Dun’s “Map” in NYU’s Vision & Voices Series; collaborated with Rihanna and Rickey Minor for the Vogue Met Gala 2015; performed with the Momenta Quartet for Tan Dun’s theatrical work “Ghost Opera”; recorded the music for David Henry Hwang’s two off-broadway productions, “The Dance and the Railroad” and “Kung Fu”; collaborated with Damon Albarn (Gorillaz/Blur) in Spoleto Festival’s premiere show, Monkey: Journey To The West; featured as the soloist with the Pacific Symphony; joined Carnegie Hall’s “Musical Explorer” program. Zhou Yi’s upcoming engagements will include Lincoln Center Festival’s “Paradise Interrupted” and guest qin artist with the San Francisco Opera’s “Dream of the Red Chamber”. Zhou Yi currently resides in New York City. She is a co-founder of the Ba Ban Chinese Music Society of New York.
