Chinese Outward Foreign Direct Investment
The East Asian Studies Center at Indiana University presents a talk by Dan Li on different types of Chinese outward foreign direct investments (OFDI), the temporal, geographic and industry patterns of Chinese OFDI, and the country and industry destinations of Chinese OFDI.
Where
Dan Li, Associate Professor of International Business, Department of Management and Entrepreneurship, Kelley School of Business, Indiana University
China’s outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) has been growing dramatically and steadily for a decade. Even as the overall global OFDI declined following the 2008 financial crisis, Chinese OFDI increased. The message that “the Chinese are coming!” pervades the business media; along comes the notion of so-called “China Threat.” Are Chinese really buying up the world? Should the world be alarmed? This talk will introduce different types of Chinese OFDI investors, the temporal, geographic and industry patterns of Chinese OFDI, and the country and industry destinations of Chinese OFDI. This talk will then discuss why Chinese firms go abroad in addition to the frequently reported “government support” by the media, what challenges Chinese investors typically encounter in their international operations, and, more importantly, what implications Chinese OFDI has for the world and U.S. economy.
