Geremie Barmé and colleagues from the Australian Centre on China in the World, Australian National University, will introduce the China Story project, an Internet-based undertaking that features: a yearbook, lexicon, blog, archive, essays on New Sinology, and material related to Thinking China. They will also discuss the political transition of 2012-2013 in the context of this project and the 2013 yearbook, titled “Civilising China.”

Geremie R. Barmé is an historian, cultural critic, filmmaker, translator and web-journal editor working on Chinese cultural and intellectual history from the early modern period (1600s) to the present. He is the director of the Australian Centre on China in the World at the Australian National University. He is a research professor and Australian Research Council Federation Fellow in the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific, where he also edits the online e-journal China Heritage Quarterly. Trained in Chinese, classical and modern, Sanskrit, and history, Professor Barmé has lived and worked in China (where he studied from 1974 to 1977), Hong Kong, Japan, and the United States.

Jeremy Goldkorn founded the popular China media website www.Danwei.org, and acts as editor and publisher. The site has tracked the changes in China’s media and Internet on a daily basis since 2003 and also features video interviews with people in culture and the media in China.

Richard Rigby is the executive director of ANU’s China Institute. He received his PhD from the department of Far Eastern history at ANU. He joined Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs in 1975, where he worked until the end of 2001; his postings included Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai, London, and Israel (Ambassador, 2000-2001).
