Refusing to give in to opposition at home, he chooses to defy his family's wishes by participating in the pageant, in an effort to break free of the standard career route his parents had mapped out for him, and to make a statement of his own. As opponents seek to sabotage and humiliate him, the main character tries to find a delicate balance between personal goals, family expectations, and conflicting Western and Eastern ideals.
