“Above Ground” is a photographic exhibition that captures a wide range of performances staged by Young Feminist Activists in China since 2012. The photographs are part of the activists’ strategy to spread their message through social media in an increasingly restrictive political climate. Recently, an increasing number of young feminists have engaged in creative performances conducted in public spaces to raise feminist issues and call attention to gender discrimination and violations of women’s rights. Their actions have successfully brought many feminist issues to the public arena, some of which have engendered policy changes, such as in legislation against domestic violence and designing of public bathrooms for women. A section of the exhibit also documents the arrest of “The Feminist Five,” young feminist activists, by the Chinese government in March 2015. The “Above Ground” exhibition is part of the semester-long series, China Remixed: Arts and Humanities in Contemporary Chinese Culture, sponsored by the IUB Arts and Humanities Council.
