The 2016 General Election in Taiwan and Its Implications for Cross-Strait Relations
The Organization of Asian Studies is honored to host Mr. Alan D. Romberg of the Stimson Center and hear him speak about the future prospects of cross-Strait relations after the Taiwan general election this year.
Where
Citizens in Taiwan elected a new president and a new legislature earlier in January this year. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) won in a landslide victory over the Kuomintang (KMT). The president-elect, Tsai Ing-wen, will now have a DPP single majority in the Legislative Yuan to help her fulfill her campaign promises. China has been monitoring the election and Tsai Ing-wen closely throughout the election. China has a very clear stand on the 1992 Consensus and the “One China” principle, which Tsai Ing-wen has refused to embrace during her campaign.
The Organization of Asian Studies is honored to host Mr. Alan D. Romberg of the Stimson Center and hear him speak about the future prospects of cross-Strait relations after the Taiwan general election this year. Mr. Romberg will provide us his observations and analyses on the impact of the election and the new government.
