Join us for a free one-day workshop for educators at the Japanese American National Museum, hosted by the USC U.S.-China Institute and the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia. This workshop will include a guided tour of the beloved exhibition Common Ground: The Heart of Community, slated to close permanently in January 2025. Following the tour, learn strategies for engaging students in the primary source artifacts, images, and documents found in JANM’s vast collection and discover classroom-ready resources to support teaching and learning about the Japanese American experience.
2012 Roundtable on Post-Communism
The Russian and East European Institute at Indiana University presents a roundtable with numerous speakers to talk about the post-communism world.
Where
For the 2012 Roundtable on Lessons from Post-Communism Judith Shapiro (Director of Natural Resources and Sustainable Development, American University, DC ), Peter Rutland (Professor of Government, Wesleyan University), and Peter Thomson (Director of the Sustainable Development Department of the Europe and Central Asia Region, World Bank) will present their responses to a number of questions regarding energy and conservation. After this the floor is open for discussion moderated by Scott O’Bryan (Associate Professor of History, IU) with additional input from scholars Gardner Bovingdon (Associate Professor, Central Eurasian Studies, IU) and Matthew Auer (Professor, School of Public and Environmental Affairs, IU).
In the afternoon, Padraic Kenney (Professor of History and Director of the Russian and East European Institute, IU) will moderate the discussion on effective pedagogies for teaching courses on topics related to energy and conservation. Zhimin Lee (Associate Professor of Political Science, Valparaiso University), Sergei Zhuk, (Associate Professor of History, Ball State University), and Andrew Buck (Assistant Professor of Sociology, University of Southern Indiana) will discuss three different pedagogical challenges and join with all participants in an exploration of approaches to communicating these complex issues to students in different settings (two year colleges, four year colleges, and research universities).
Faculty and graduate students are invited to attend and participate informally in the discussion.
