Stephen Joske, Director of Country Analysis, China Forecasting Service      

Stephen Joske is the Director of the Economist Intelligence Unit’s China Forecasting Service in Beijing. From 2004 to 2007 he worked at the Australian Embassy in Beijing as the Senior Australian Treasury Representative to China. Before working at the Economist Intelligence Unit, he worked as senior analyst covering the Chinese economy for the Australian Office of National Assessments. In this capacity, Stephen provided advice directly to the Australian prime minister. He also worked for a number of years as Senior Adviser on macroeconomic policy to the former Australian Treasurer, Peter Costello. Stephen speaks fluent Chinese and has been visiting China since 1978.

As Director of Country Analysis in Beijing, Stephen has been responsible for implementing and developing the Economist Intelligence Unit’s new China Regional Forecasting Service, a unique service for companies operating in or looking to develop new business in China. The service provides political and economic data, analysis, and forecasts for China’s 31 provinces and 40 prefectures. To build a complete data set, Stephen regularly works with the Chinese National Bureau of Statistics and Manchester Economic Forecasting. Stephen and his team launched the service in August of this year.

Donald Straszheim, Vice Chairman Roth Capital Partners

Donald H. Straszheim is Vice Chairman of Roth Capital Partners in Los Angeles, former global Chief Economist at Merrill Lynch in New York City, a contributing columnist for Forbes.com, Visiting Scholar at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, and a long-time China specialist.

Straszheim, a Wall Street veteran, joined Roth Capital Partners in 2006 to spearhead the firm’s China initiative. Since the mid 1990s, he has focused on understanding how China affects investments, companies, industries, sectors and policy in America and elsewhere.
From 1985 to 1997, Straszheim served as the Global Chief Economist for Merrill Lynch and Co. where he was voted ten consecutive years to Institutional Investor’s ‘All-Star Team’. As Merrill’s chief economic spokesperson, he traveled globally representing the firm and led its worldwide research effort.

From 1997 to 2001, he was President of the Milken Institute, a not-for-profit economic think tank in Santa Monica, CA, continuing as Vice Chairman until 2004.

From 2001 to 2005, Straszheim was principal of Straszheim Global Advisors, an economic and financial markets advisory firm with offices in Los Angeles and Beijing.

Currently Straszheim serves on various public-and private-sector boards and is immediate past President of the Chartered Financial Analysts Society of Los Angeles. He earned B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Purdue University, and is a regular speaker and media commentator on China and the global economy and markets.
