Phillip E. Bloom

Guest Speaker: Philip Bloom, Curator of the Chinese Garden & Director of the Center for East Asian Garden Studies

Chinese gardens also have a long history in the U.S., but are not so widely-distributed. Philip Bloom will talk about Chinese gardens in China and in the U.S. He'll discuss their design and function in pre-modern China and the roles they play in China and elsewhere today. Bloom is the curator of the Huntington's Chinese garden (Liu fang yuan, the Garden of Flowing Fragrance) and director of the Center for East Asian Garden Studies. He is a specialist in the history of gardens, designed landscapes, and Buddhist art and ritual of China's Song dynasty (960–1279).

This workshop is in collaboration with Huntington Library and sponsored by the USC U.S.-China Institute. It is offered in partnership with the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia and with support from the Freeman Foundation.
