This summer, I am fortunate enough to be able to travel to Japan through an NCTA Japan Tour, which focuses on the Voices of Peace and Reconciliation: Messages from Japan to the United States. One of our requirements prior to getting to Japan is to watch the documentary “Pictures from a Hiroshima Schoolyard” written/directed by Bryan Reichhardt and produced by Shizumi Shigeto Manale. I definitely recommend watching it! It gives great insight about the bombings through the children who experienced it firsthand. This documentary would be great to show to students in snippets as a way to supplement the readings/primary sources one uses to teach about Hiroshima. Point of views from children are often not provided during war and this documentary does a great way of highlighting this. The reenactments of the bombings are also very powerful, and definitely make this event even more personal since it focuses on the children. Teacher perspectives are provided as well. Overall, great watch so definitely check it out if you can! Here is a link with more info on the documentary: http://www.hiroshimaschoolyard.com/aboutthefilm/
