Japanese print maker

Now until Aug. 12 at the Pasadena Asian Art Museum is an exhibit of one of Japan's most important print makers of the 19th century. His amazing rich, multi-color prints illustrate mythological characters, celebrities of his era, as well as the growing influences of the West. After gazing at his detailed, amazingly registered prints -- every hair line right on target -- go upstairs to see woodblock prints by Kristina Hagman, "36 views of Mt. Rainier". Her beautiful homage to the printmaker Hokusai's "36 view of Mt. Fuji" recount urban and natural themes in almost child-like images, compared to the intricacies of Yoshitoshi's prints. 21st century and 19th century works.
