On April 11, 2006, Chinese President Hu Jintao and visiting Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili signed the Joint Statement on Further Developing Friendship and Cooperation between the People's Republic of China and Georgia. The Statement says that Georgia opposes any form of "Taiwan independence" including "de jure Taiwan independence".
The Statement says that Georgia reaffirms its pursuit of the one-China policy, acknowledges that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing China and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. Georgia opposes any form of "Taiwan independence" including "de jure Taiwan independence" and opposes Taiwan's accession to any international and regional organization only for sovereign states. Georgia will not establish any official relations or conduct any official exchanges with Taiwan.
According to the Statement, China reaffirms support of Georgia's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, appreciates and welcomes Georgia's efforts in maintaining internal stability and developing national economy.
The Statement says that China holds that the questions related to Abkhazia and South Ossetia are internal affairs of Georgia and should be properly handled through peaceful negotiations based on respect of Georgia's state sovereignty and territorial integrity. China supports various efforts of the Georgian government to this end.
China and Georgia established their diplomatic ties in 1992.
