Ringing in the Year of the Rooster, Martial Spirit is a first of its kind martial arts celebration presented by the Chinese Culture Center (CCC) featuring an exhibition at the CCC Visual Art Center, performances and documentation of Bay Area martial arts schools, and community workshops at Ping Yuen public housing in San Francisco Chinatown.

Breaking down stereotypes about the mysticism of martial arts prevalent in today’s culture, artist Justin Hoover’s solo exhibition, Martial Spirit, instead explores martial arts as a practice through visual arts.

Martial Spirit is presented by the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco as part of “Building Our Town,” a theme to anchor a series of powerful arts initiatives to activate and build community throughout Chinatown and San Francisco, supported by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) “Our Town” grant, San Francisco Arts Commission, California Arts Council, Community Challenge Grant Program, Bloomberg Philanthropies, San Francisco Foundation, and Grants for the Arts.
