The wheel and lotus are common symbols in Buddhist art and have been frequently used in various cultures throughout Asia. Looking at these symbols in ancient ceramics and tiles from LACMA’s collection including Dish with Peony Spray and Floral Scrolls (Vietnam), Two Tiles with Lotuses (Pakistan), and Foliated Platter (China), learn about the significance of these symbols and what they represent in Buddhist art.

Create your own unique design incorporating the wheel and the lotus on a tile square,  using decorative imagery seen on ancient works as inspiration.
