Merle Goldman is Professor Emerita of History at Boston University and Research Associate of the John K. Fairbank Center for East Asian Research at Harvard University. She is a leading expert on Chinese affairs, and the author of a number of books and articles on China's cultural and political history. Her most recent books are From Comrade to Citizen: The Struggle for Political Rights in China (2005), Sowing the Seeds of Democracy in China: Political Reform in the Deng Xiaoping Era (1994), China’s Intellectuals: Advise and Dissent, Harvard University Press (1981) and, with co-author John K. Fairbank, the expanded version of China: A New History (1998). In addition, Dr. Goldman is the editor or co-editor of eight books on China.
