A Venice of China: Transforming China's Cities for the Next Century

Professor Renee Chow has spent over 30 years documenting and researching Chinese patterns of living, from Uyghur villages to megacity Beijing, and was the first to conduct contemporary analysis of these drastically different regions. She will share her findings from a canal village outside Shanghai, called the "Venice of China," and explain what we can learn from a place that addresses the challenges of designing cities for modern lifestyles while preserving Chinese culture.

Renee Chow, Associate Professor of Architecture and Urban Design and Eva Li Chair of Design Ethics, University of California, Berkeley; Principal, Studio URBIS.
