Using the upcoming Getty exhibition Cave Temples of Dunhuang: Buddhist Art on China's Silk Road as a classroom, this free workshop will help K-12 educators from diverse fields enhance their teaching on China. Workshop participants will learn about Buddhism, the science of art conservation, and the unique history of Dunhuang from the Getty's scientists, curators, and art historians. Teacher alumni from the UCLA Confucius Institute-sponsored Summer Institute On China (SIOC), an international professional development program for middle and high school teachers, will share the lesson plans created after visiting Dunhuang and help attendees generate their own classroom-ready materials.
