Visual artist Tang Qingnian demonstrates the art of Chinese calligraphy in a presentation in the Chinese Garden, and discusses his recent series of ink paintings, An Offering to Roots, with curator Phillip Bloom. Tang's paintings, which depict gnarled, barren trees—long a metaphor in Chinese art and literature for the vagaries of human life. Full-sized reproductions of the scroll paintings are on view in a special installation in the garden June 22 through Sept. 23. Tang Qingnian is the 2019 Cheng Family Foundation Artist-in-Residence at The Huntington.
