Dr. Jin is undertaking a comparative study on the formation of East Asian family names and genealogies. He examines how family names and systems change across China, Japan, and Korea, differences in how family genealogies are recorded, and evidence of population movement in the pre-modern era. His own background as a Korean-Chinese educated in Japan informs this work. He spent the past year as a visiting scholar at the Institute of East Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.
