Shin Kawashima, Japan Scholar, Woodrow Wilson Center
Professor Shin Kawashima of the University of Tokyo will discuss relations between the Republic of China (ROC) and East bloc countries during the 1950-60s, based on his research on Taiwanese archival documents and the Wilson Center’s translated materials from East European states. He will examine the ways in which the Republic of China contacted and made dialogue with communist countries, even while the People’s Republic of China was establishing economic relations with western nations against the backdrop of growing animosity between Moscow and Beijing. His research shows that while the ROC maintained a staunchly anti-communist stance throughout this period, it nevertheless explored new possibilities with communist countries.
