Poetry and Textual Memory in the Chinese Garden is a one-day symposium that explores the poetic context of gardens as well as the context of the garden in poetry. Poetic inscriptions and names provide insight into the "soul" of the garden, enhancing the spirit of leisure and pleasure, ultimately revealing the owner's depth of knowledge and refinement. In turn, gardens are sites for poetic creations, and the written word gives permanence to the temporal nature of physical structures.
