Oil & Mutton: The Uyghur People through Photography

Monday, April 28, 2008
6:30 PM

Xinjiang is strategically important, harboring much of China’s remaining oil reserves and providing Beijing with a link to Central Asia and the ancient Silk Road. The people of Xinjiang, however, are Muslims who have long desired to establish an independent East Turkestan. As China forcibly develops its hinterlands, the Uyghur way of life is disappearing into modern Chinese cities. With pictures taken in 2007, this photography show seeks to document and highlight the culture of a people frequently overlooked by Western China watchers.
