Neural Buddhism and Mindfulness Revolution?: Buddhist Thought, Secular Ground and Global Ethics

This lecture will be an exploration of the intellectual, cultural, and spiritual implications of the growing presence of Buddhism-derived contemplative practices in the West. Is there potential for East and West to meet at a meaningful place of cross-cultural transformation? The lecture will focus on the potentiality of Buddhism in the emergence of a more "global" and inclusive concept of ethics.

As the Chair of the Mind and Life Institute, DR. THUPTEN JINPA has been at the center of interdisciplinary dialogues between the sciences and contemplative knowledge for decades. He holds a Ph.D. in religious studies from the University of Cambridge as well as a Geshe Lharampa from Ganden Monastery. He has been principal translator for H.H. the Dalai Lama since 1985 and is most recently the author of "A Fearless Heart: How the Courage to be Compassionate Can Transform Our Lives."

A post-lecture reception will be held at 6:30pm.

Sponsored by the Tibet Governance Project, the Sigur Center for Asian Studies, and GW's Department of Religion
