A Nation Ascendant: Aesthetics of Might, Politics, and Faith in Ancient China

Image

Artwork is frequently categorized as either religio-philosophical or secular, with style transcending both issues. Furthermore, materials used by artists were chosen for specific reasons that may include issues of durability, cost, malleability, and symbolic content. This lecture will address the use of medium as an aesthetic marker of style symbolizing socio-political patronage, religious doctrine, and the visual culture of the rising power of the Chinese empire in the ancient world. Learn how the power of medium was used to conquer the afterlife, speak to the ancestors, and spread the Dharma from the Qin through the Tang Dynasties.

A light reception will follow the lecture.
