The Missionary’s Curse and Other Tales: a Catholic Village in China 1650-2000

Image

Invited participants will discuss the manuscript of Harrison’s new book on the history of a Catholic village in Shanxi.  Issues covered will depend on the participants but are likely to include oral history methodology, Christian conversion, imperialism, the Boxer Uprising, similarities between Christianity and Chinese religious culture, and the impact of post-49 religious policy in China.  The workshop will be divided chronologically with sessions on the periods 1600-1840, 1840-1949, and post 49.  Auditors are welcome to attend one or all of the sessions, but will need to read the manuscript ahead of time as there will not be presentations of its content.  If you wish to come please contact Henrietta Harrison (hharris@fas.harvard.edu) before 15 February for the  manuscript and details of arrangements.
