Marking Time: Seasonal Imagery in Japanese Prints

Image

August 9, 2016 — May 21, 2017
South Ambulatory

An installation of Japanese prints featuring seasonal imagery will celebrate the AMAM’s 2016–17 theme of “Time.” In Japanese culture, deeply rooted appreciation for the natural world combines with the four distinct seasons to create a rich tradition of art and literature that evokes and represents seasonal change. Woodblock prints by legendary masters of the Edo period (1603–1868), such as Kitagawa Utamaro, Torii Kiyonaga, Utagawa Hiroshige, and Utagawa Kuniyoshi, will be paired with 20th-century works by such artists as Kawase Hasui, Sekino Junichiro, Kitaoka Fumio, and Maki Haku.

The exhibition is organized by Kevin R.E. Greenwood, Joan L. Danforth Assistant Curator of Asian Art.
