Lust for Life: Qi and Realism in Ancient Chinese Art

Image

Speaker:
Juliann Wolfrgram, lecturer in Asian Art History, California Institute of Technology.

Ancient artwork is frequently categorized as either religio-philosophical or secular, with style transcending both issues. Moreover, when art was used to convey military might, political power, and spiritual communication, the aesthetics of the great dynasties of early China often dictated a form based in realism. Stylistic analysis of artifacts from the Qin through the Tang Dynasties will address Chinese attitudes towards art, including the notion of Qi, or Cosmic Breath, as aesthetic markers for not only understanding the ancient past but also for appreciating its extant visual culture.
