LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | The Long Embrace: US-China Relations from the Perspective of History

China has long tried to work out how much of America it really wants. The same holds true for the United States. Both sides have spent centuries demonizing and celebrating each other. In the age of Trump and Xi Jinping, what can history tell us about the ties between these two global titans?

John Pomfret is an award-winning journalist and writer, and the author of the best-selling Chinese Lessons: Five Classmates and the Story of the New China. He first went to study in China in 1980 and has spent 20 years living in China as a correspondent and writer. He will be discussing his new book, "The Beautiful Country and the Middle Kingdom: America and China, 1776 to the Present."
