Karamay, hailed by Robert Koehler of Variety as “an astonishing achievement on every level“, will be playing April 3rd at Yerba Buena Center of the Arts’ as part of their “Fearless” series on independent Chinese documentaries.
In 1994, a a community center fire broke out, killing over 300 children. The students were performing for state officials and were told to stand by while the officials exited first. After the fire, the story was heavily censored in the Chinese state media. To this day, the families of Karamay have not been allowed to publicly mourn their children. This film is an investigation of a national tragedy long held in silence.
