Irv Drasnin: Documenting China

Image

Irv Drasnin learned about China at Harvard and subsequently made documentaries for CBS and PBS. His Misunderstanding China (1972) was a startling and accurate assessment of the fears, hopes, and misrepresentations that caused Americans to fail to grasp critical realities about China. Drasnin's documentaries about post-1989 China were broadcast in the PBS Frontline series. He is currently working on a documentary about Sidney Rittenberg, an American who joined the Chinese Communist Party and lived in China until the 1980s. Drasnin will screen parts of his films and discuss the challenges of working in China and visually conveying ideas about the country and its people.
